Australian bank statement to Xero
Xero in Australia doesn't import PDF statements, so convert the PDF here first. It's read in your browser, checked against the balance, and written as a CSV with DD/MM/YYYY dates.
Converted in this browser. The PDF is never uploaded. Check it yourself
- Stays on your device. The PDF is read in your browser and never uploaded.
- DD/MM/YYYY dates. Read day first when the statement shows a BSB, AUD, EFTPOS or BPAY.
- Free for 5 pages a day. Excel and CSV, no account.

QBO, OFX and Xero settings
QuickBooks Desktop matches the bank ID against its list of banks; if it refuses the file, enter your bank's ID. Credit card statements are exported as credit card accounts automatically. Xero reads CSV dates in your organisation's regional order, so pick the order your Xero organisation uses.
How it works
Download the PDF
From your bank's online banking, save the statement for the period you're missing in Xero.
Drop it here
The statement is read in this browser and each row is checked against the running balance.
Download for Xero
Then in Xero, open the bank account and choose Import a statement. Excel and plain CSV are free.
Australian bank statement to Xero: why convert the PDF first
Xero's PDF statement import is for US and Canadian organisations. Xero's own feature sheet for it is titled "PDF Statement Import US and CA" and covers statements "from supported banks". On Xero's product ideas board, a request titled "Ability to import PDF in other regions (exc. US and CA)" was opened in April 2026. An Australian organisation that's missing a bank feed for a period, or got statements as PDFs from a client, imports a CSV instead.
Australian statement layouts it reads
Each of these is covered by an automated test that runs on every change:
- Debit / Credit / Balance columns.
- Balances printed with CR or DR after them, such as $3,104.80 CR.
- Negative amounts written $-3,425.94, as some card statements do.
- DD/MM/YYYY dates. When every date could be either way round, a BSB, AUD, EFTPOS or BPAY on the statement means day first.
We test layouts, not banks. Besides statements we generated, we've run two public demo statements from Frollo's open-banking sandbox (a transaction account and a credit card), which are sample data, not real customer statements. We haven't tested real statements from named Australian banks, so check the balance check before you import.
About the Xero CSV
The Xero layout uses the columns of Xero's statement import template (Date, Amount, Payee, Description, Reference) with dates as DD/MM/YYYY, because Xero reads CSV dates in your organisation's regional order. It's part of Pro, which isn't on sale yet. The free CSV and Excel files contain the same transactions, and Xero's import screen lets you assign the columns yourself. We haven't imported the file into a live Australian Xero organisation, so look at the preview Xero shows before you finish.
Check that nothing is uploaded
You don't have to take our word for it. Two ways to see for yourself:
- Go offline. Once this page has loaded, turn off Wi-Fi or switch on airplane mode, then drop a statement in. It still converts, because the converter runs in your browser and the page keeps a copy of itself for offline use.
- Watch the network. Open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), choose the Network tab, then convert a file. You'll see no request carrying your PDF.
The one exception is AI repair, which you have to switch on yourself for a statement our parser couldn't read cleanly. It sends the text we extracted from the PDF (not the file) to our server, and only after you tick a box agreeing to it. Details are on the privacy page.

Questions
Can Xero import a PDF bank statement in Australia?
Not as far as we can tell: Xero's PDF statement import is for US and Canadian organisations. Australian organisations import a CSV or OFX file instead.
Which banks does it support?
It reads layouts rather than following a list of banks. We haven't tested real statements from named Australian banks; the balance check shows whether a conversion is complete.
Is the Xero CSV free?
The ready-made Xero layout is part of Pro, which isn't on sale yet. Plain CSV and Excel are free, and you can map their columns in Xero's import screen.
Is my statement uploaded?
No. The PDF is opened and read by your browser, on your device. The only time anything leaves your device is AI repair, which you switch on yourself; it sends the extracted text, not the file, and we don't store it.
Does it work with scanned statements?
Not yet. The converter reads the text inside a PDF. A scan or a photo of a statement is an image with no text in it, so nothing comes out. Most statements downloaded from online banking are text-based.
